Google celebrates anniversaries, birthdays, and special events by changing the google logo for that day. On Einstein’s birthday last month, a small photo of Einstein’s head was displayed next to the google symbol.

To celebrate Sesame Street’s 40th anniversary, Michelle Obama is scheduled to appear in the first episode and she will talk about gardening and eating healthy.

Maine Gay Marriage

In Maine, gay marriage was put to a vote. Voters will decide whether to repeal a law allowing same-sex marriage, passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. John Baldacci in May. The law never took effect because of a petition drive by conservatives.
Other states that have legalized gay marriage through legislation or court rulings and not by popular vote are Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut. On the other hand, constitutional amendments banning gay marriage have been approved in all 30 states where they have been on the ballot.
Early returns showed a close contest, as had been forecast. With 70 of 608 precincts reporting, the gay-marriage side had 53 percent to 47 percent for the other side. Gay-rights advocates say that losing in Maine would further a perception that only judges and politicians embrace same-sex marriage.

Supporters of pro- and anti- repeal had expressed their sentiments on the matter:

“It’s a defining moment,” said Marc Mutty, chairman of Stand for Marriage Maine, which is leading the repeal effort. “What happens here in Maine is going to have a mushrooming effect on the issue at large.”

Mr. Mutty’s group has repeatedly warned voters that if same-sex marriage survives in Maine, public schools will most likely teach children about it.

"If we don't win, then Maine will have its place in infamy because no state has ever voted for homosexual marriage," said Chuck Schott of Portland, who stood near a polling place in Maine's biggest city with a pro-repeal campaign sign.

Another Portland resident, Sarah Holman, 26, said she was "very torn" but decided, despite her conservative upbringing, to vote in favor of letting gays marry. "They love and they have the right to love. And we can't tell somebody how to love."

Actually, it's a personal choice whether you want to spend your life with someone your own sex. No one can stop you from doing so because it is your own life and you're the only one responsible for all choices you will be making. But when it comes to the issue of having same-sex marriage, I think it will be a different story. Morally speaking, the sacrament of marriage from the beginning is solely intended for the union of two different person of different sexes. I think without marriage, gays or lesbians can still enjoy the fullness of life with their chosen partners.

Washington State election results are coming and the official vote of the 2009 election ballot in Washington State will begin to be announced after 8:00 pm PST. Christie supports tax credits for families sending their children to private schools, he supports state-funded vouchers for families trying to get their children out of failing school districts, he supports merit pay for teachers and wants to increase the availability of charter schools. Christie supports civil unions and opposes same-sex marriage. He has promised not to raise taxes, and to lower the state income and business taxes – although he has stated this will not be doable immediately, and especially not doable in the first year.

Berkshire Bets on U.S. With Purchase of Railroad

Update | 11:06 a.m. Berkshire Hathaway, the investment vehicle of Warren E. Buffett, said on Tuesday that it planned to buy the 77.4 percent of Burlington Northern Santa Fe it did not already own for $26 billion in cash and stock, in the largest deal in Berkshire history.

The deal, which including Berkshire’s previous investment and the assumption of $10 billion in Burlington Northern debt brings the total value to $44 billion, represents what Mr. Buffett said was a big bet on the United States. He told CNBC in an interview that railroad operators cannot do well unless American businesses were producing goods and customers were buying them.

“It’s an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States,” he said in a written statement. “I love these bets.”

In the interview with CNBC, Mr. Buffett said that the deal came together quickly. He made a

proposal to Matthew K. Rose, Burlington Northern’s chairman and chief executive. Mr. Rose took the proposal to his board — and got an answer in about 15 minutes.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to become a part of the Berkshire Hathaway family,” Mr. Rose said in a statement. “We admire Warren’s leadership philosophy supporting long-term investment that will allow BNSF to focus on future needs of our railroad, our customers and the U.S. transportation infrastructure.”

During the financial crisis of last year, Mr. Buffett spent $14.5 billion to buy preferred shares of three blue-chip American companies, Wrigley, General Electric and Goldman Sachs. These companies didn’t get Mr. Buffett’s seal of approval for free, however; the preferred stock carries hefty dividend payments.

Burlington Northern was created in June of 1994 with the merger of Burlington Northern Inc. and the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation in a stock swap valued at $2.7 billion. The merger was seen as complementary, giving it access to the coal fields of the West as well as West Coasts ports and Mexico and Canada. Santa Fe specialized in intermodal services, which involves moving goods by rail to be delivered locally by truck. Burlington Northern carried heavy commodities like coal, grain and timber.

Under the terms of Tuesday’s deal, Berkshire will pay about $100 for each Burlington Northern share, a price comprised of about 60 percent in cash and 40 percent in stock. Berkshire deals historically have almost never used stock, but Mr. Buffett told CNBC that Burlington Northern wanted a tax-free component for their shareholders.

Shares in Burlington Northern, which closed Monday at $76.07, jumped nearly 30 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday to $98.15. Class A shares in Berkshire were up slightly in premarket trading at $98,971.57.

As part of the deal, Berkshire will split its class B shares 50-to-1 to help pay for the acquisition. It’s an unusual move for Mr. Buffett, who has long said he did not like stock splits. Most of the stock component in the deal, however, will be in Berkshire class A shares.

Of the $16 billion in cash for the deal, Berkshire plans to use $8 billion on its books and $8 billion borrowed from banks, which will be repaid in three annual installments. After the deal, Berkshire will have $20 billion in cash on hand.

“I like cash,” Mr. Buffett said.

The Burlington deal is the largest for Mr. Buffett since he agreed nearly two years ago to acquire control of Marmon Holdings, the industrial holding company of the Pritzker family, for an initial price of $4.5 billion.

Burlington Northern was advised by Goldman Sachs, Evercore Partners and the law firm Cravath Swaine & Moore. Berkshire was advised by the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson.

SEPTA has gone on Strike! SEPTA’s strike closes all subway, bus and trolley service. The SEPTA Transport Workers Union Local 243 Strike started moments ago at 3 am EST. It is affecting counties of Bucks, Montgomery and Chester.

Hundreds of thousands of commuters now Tuesday must search for alternative means of transportation as the surprise came as a schock to early morning travelers. Local 243 andSEPTA have yet to issue a statement.

SEPTA provided 928,000 trips daily. Now as many as 425,000 passengers are forced to seek other transportation. Many found out when they arrived at their stations. Most workers said they had no notice, complaining the absence of even a text or call.

The SEPTA strike has been called “irresponsible” by Governor Rendell and Mayor Nutter calls it “outrageous”.
